Old-Fashioned
by Lena
Yep!
Wanted to do this for my 30th, but I’m too impatient… ( giggle )
When my heart is set on something, it’s hard to reason with it…
Yes, I’m a rebel! But a rebel with a cause…
There are a lot of non-profit organizations through which you can donate your gorgeous hair, to cancer patients. However, if you do the research, you will find out, that organization, such as Locks of Love actually charges kids money for a wig. I find it outrageous!
It takes six 10 inch ponytails to make a wig ( Locks of Love ) and eight of them that are 8 inch long. ( Pantene Beautiful Lengths )
I don’t want this post to be about all the negative sides of Locks of love or any other charity.
( please do your own research )
However, knowing, that family of a sick child has to pay for a wig, according to that family’s income level, is more than enough reason for me, to donate my hair to an organization that gives it for free.
The family is going through enough pain and trauma as it is. I know, because I lost my father to cancer.
To be honest with you, I was a bit scared. It’s natural …
17 inches of undamaged, naturally full and wild curls, is something every woman should be proud of.
But right now, I feel more “Woman” than I ever did in my life.
It’s an amazing feeling!
Even though my friends and especially mom, has screamed in unison ” Nooooo! “, when I looked in a mirror this morning, I said ” Yeees!! “
And another thing…
In a town, that has so many healthy, but plastic-looking women, with ridiculous hair extensions, it’s truly empowering to be walking it, my way…
When I sat down with my hairdresser and explained what kind of a style I wanted,
she said; “No, this is too old-fashioned! Let’s do the hip “messy & sexy Charlize Theron bob”
My reply was; ” She is truly a stunning woman, no question, but I’m way too old-fashioned for that “
After the cut, the whole salon was in shock…
In the words of Holly Golightly ;
” It’s useful being top banana in the shock department. “
One customer said; “Wow! This is such a difficult style to pull off and you nailed it!”
And guess what?
My look really did standout at this year’s Oscar After Parties
When I was a little girl, I tried my best to fit it… unsuccessfully.
Always an outcast, with my full lips that everyone teased me about and my not so Caucasian looks.
I was really insecure about my looks and shed quite a few tears.
But today, I am proud to be a woman, who dares to stand out and help another woman feel beautiful again.
Even if it means, I’ll be called “old-fashioned” …

You rock it.Gorgeous!
You look beautiful!
Looks terrific. Nice photos and story and no one should charge children for wigs. That is awful. Enjoy your new do and you.
two thumbs up
Absolutely gorgeous!
Elena! You do rock that haircut! I had the hair cut from hell this last weekend, but it is growing on me. I am posting about it tomorrow…
How cool are you to donate your lovely locks.
You sure know how to live large! The Oscars??? Were you there? Is there another blog post to come?
Thank you, Susie! ))
it was kind of a low-key night for me … met a few great people at the after party.. but the big shebang was at the Vanity bash & Elton John’s party… nope, not invited there yet )) and as far as Vanity goes… even having a golden guy, doesn’t give you an entrance into the “Tower” … last year they didn’t even let Oscar Winning Composer Ludovic Bource in.. (( I think it’s sad, that a person who won, being hustled.. simply cause he’s not Tom Cruise ( we talked about it last night and the producer I met said that he should have fired he’s publicist on the spot ))
I agree! To get all the way there and not be invited to the big parties would be such a let down! Sounds like the one you went to you was a lot of fun anyway!
Gorgeous and stunning. A perfect look for you🙂
Way to go beautiful woman! You look great!
WONDERFUL!
Such a great thing to do Elena! Your beautiful hair will make someone to feel more alive and hopeful – while you still look fabulous!
Fabulous haircut! I had mine that short years ago when I met my husband and I’ve been thinking of going back as I need to have rotator cuff surgery…I just may have to after seeing yours!
You are truly stunning, in many ways you remind me of Audrey Hepburn, you pull of that look with grace, and believe me I know (as I have done it myself), cutting your locks off is not always an easy decision. Thanks for sharing and being so inspirational. I truly wish I could meet you someday, you are such a strong and wonderful woman from what I have read.
Thank you for a beautiful compliment! I hope we do someday! )
love,
lena
You choose to collect memories instead of hair.😉
You look great, as ever.
Love it. And I’m sure the woman who gets to feel beautiful again because of your gorgeously “old-fashioned” cut will love it, too.🙂 What a wonderful gift.
All the power to you. It’s what you like, not what everyone else likes.
Elena, I think you could pull off being bald. You have a confidence and a sense of peace in your look that make anything beautiful. I love the new look.
Thank you so much, dear Andra!
lena xo
Love your style, Elena – and I’m not just talking about the hair!❤
wow thats so cool..i mean brave kind of cool.. and inspiring too…now i want to make a list of things i want to do on my 30th with at least one good cause included..since my hair length is already short i will have to think about something else…but thankyou for the inspiration for doing one good thing on 30th..
Love your bravery, zest for life and utter selflessness. With or without the locks your qualities are what make you beautiful.
Thank you, Annette! )
Stunning and for such a good cause. Bravo
No wonder you are impatient. There must be soooooo many years to wait until you’re 30🙂
thank you for the compliment, but I’m 29 next month )) woohoo!
You are absolutely, stunningly beautiful! I can relate to your mom though because my 21 y/o step daughter just did this to us! lol Now she has a pixie cut but she did it in order to donate her hair to locks of love. The problem with her, though, is that she’s barely 5 ft tall and weighs over 200 lbs. I think a pixie cut is more designed for someone a little more on the slender side. But I didn’t SAY all this to her. I told her that if she was happy, then I’m happy for her! lol She BELIEVES she looks like Ann Hathoway! (sp?)
if it makes her happy, then it’s great! We need more people who are happy, regardless of what today’s bs “beauty standards” are!
hahaha! You’re right😉
What a lovely thing to do and you get a stunning new look in exchange! and the best thing is you can do it all over again🙂 Oscar parties too, life is a bitch…
Ah! Oscars looks happy to be with you😉
Thank you so much for the info on Locks of Love. Every 2 years my granddaughter donates her hair to them…I’m sure she doesn’t realize that they charge for the wigs.
Great look!
You look awesome! Wow, what a way to make a statement! You don’t have to have long locks and a plastic, Barbie-face to look gorgeous! Always a pleasure reading your blog, Elena! Keep on inspiring!🙂
FANTASTIC. I JUST went from brunette to platinum blonde for my BD today!!! Congrats to you Sort hair rulz!!!
I think your new hairstyle looks great – what a wonderful cause! I’ve heard that some charities charge for their wigs… I’m glad you found a great organization that gives the wigs for free, as they all should.
Lovely!
